🍇 What is Rare, What is Given ⛰️

Updated: Sep 16

Montana is not known for vineyards. Our mountains and cold nights keep most grapes away — and yet, with effort, care, and patience, it is possible. This summer, our neighbor vendor at the farmers’ market Nathaniel and Elise shared with us a basket of freshly picked grapes, grown right here in the Bitterroot Valley. They were still warm from the sun, still carrying the scent of the vine. What began as a gift of fruit became something more: a gift of friendship, generosity, and shared knowledge. We pressed them into purée, carrying their fragrance into this batch of soap.

The color, however, came not from the grapes but from another quiet plant: Alkanet Root. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is called 紫草 (Zǐ Cǎo) — valued for its cooling nature, clearing heat and calming inflammation. In Ayurveda, it is known as Ratanjot, a root treasured both for its medicinal gentleness and its deep natural hues. Slowly infused into olive oil over many weeks, alkanet does not shout; instead, it works in whispers — lending the bar a muted green-gray tone and a quiet healing presence. Its patience in infusion mirrors the patience of recovery itself.

Then there is Tamanu — rare, resinous, and precious. Pressed from the nuts of trees that grow in tropical coastal soils, this deep green butter has long been revered for its ability to restore and repair. To hold tamanu is to hold something uncommon, a reminder of how much effort the earth spends to give us even a little of it. In this bar, tamanu anchors everything, lending resilience and strength.

Philosophy teaches us that what is rare should not only be admired but used with intention. A grape grown in unlikely soil, a root infused slowly, an oil gathered from distant shores — each asks us to pause, to see effort as beauty, and to accept what is given with gratitude. Sageveil is about recovery: the slow, steady work of returning to balance, not through force, but through care.

Reading this felt like walking through the farmers’ market again — slow, real, and human. I hope you keep writing these stories; they’re as good for the spirit as the soaps are for the skin.
